Passing on the hobby to friends

From: ltrboxingrichters (ltrboxingrichters@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-07-15 21:23:35 UTC
I would like to let some of my friends know about this hobby.

I was thinking of e-mail them with links to web sites. Do you have
some suggestions for just the basic introduction information? I
would like to have to explain as little as possible.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We have given speedball carving sets, erasers, and an ink pad in a plastic container along with web directions as birthday and holiday gifts. The results have been disappointing though; a lot of the containers saw spaghetti sauce!

Of course there is the www.letterboxing.org site which is essential to get clues.

But I've always also recommended the http://www.letterboxing.info site since I find it very helpful.

Another nice synopsis can be found at:

http://www.confessionsofdecember.com/lbna/lbstart.asp

But actually we've had the best luck taking someone out with us (I guess some people don't really want to read about it). We got my nephew & his fiance started that way and two friends recently asked that we give them a "private training session". We showed them how to use a compass, they followed the clues and we showed them what to do about stamping in the box logbook & a personal journal.

There is always the excellent FAQ on the LbNA site
http://www.letterboxing.org/faq/faq.html
as well as Randy Hall's book, The Letterboxer's Companion. Beginners need to know
about the environmental and privacy concerns which are adressed very well in both of
these sources. Funhog

I think the previous posts might not be going in the right direction.
If you really want to pass this hobby to a friend give them the gift
of the letterboxing bug. Hold off on the emails, the books, etc and
take them out for a letterbox outing. Once they participate...THEN
give them the tools to become involved (i.e. web groups, books, et
al).

Remember that people only remember the first impression... if their
first impression is a message group, they are likely to not be as
enthusiastic [ as compared to experiencing the LB hunt]! Also, get
them involved and then bring them to a gathering! Afterall, half the
reason we love this sport so much is the oppurtunity to go hiking
with incredible people whom we might not have met...

We again want to openly thank (or is it yell at?) Patrick and Amy for
getting us entirely hooked on letterboxing almost 2 years ago!

I have to put my two cents in here. Our good friends
MommaFox and Bald Eagle talked to us about this
letterboxing thing for months before we listened. Then
they kidnapped us to VT and made us letterbox with
them. (ONLY KIDDING ) We had to letterbox but after
the first one we were hooked. I wish we had listened
to them. But my main point here is all the talk in the
world is just talk no one listens. Show them how much
fun it is and they will understand.

Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.

That's a good suggestion. That's basiclly how I got hooked. My parents and brother had been doing it for a while. My mother was taking my kids and they had all the supplies. Finally on a trip to a wedding I decided to participate. Instant addiction!

Unfortunately these friends are mostly out of state. College friends we still see occassionally and hear from regularly.
